About
A roofing manual for people who do not speak roofer
The Roofing Manual exists to answer one kind of question well: "what is actually true about my roof, and what should it cost?" The roof over your head is one of the most expensive parts of your house, most people buy two or three in a lifetime, and nearly everything written about them online is trying to capture your phone number. This site takes the other lane.
- Free calculators that run in your browser. Roof area, materials, replacement cost, pitch, ventilation, financing, and an insurance claim readiness quiz. No signup, no email gate, and the assumptions are printed next to every result.
- Guides written like a contractor talks. Plain English, specific numbers, and the stuff the industry says quietly to each other but rarely to homeowners.
Who is behind it
Every guide and every calculator on this site is reviewed by James Turner, a roofing contractor with more than 20 years in residential roofing and insurance restoration, based in Charlotte, North Carolina. James owns and operates Best Roofing Now, a roofing company serving the Charlotte area. The full background is on his author page.
How the content is made
Drafts are produced with AI assistance for research and first drafts, then fact-checked, corrected, and approved by James before anything publishes. He adds the field stories, fixes the prices against what he actually sees on jobs, and kills anything that reads like filler. No guide goes live without that human pass. The full process is documented in our editorial policy, because we think transparency about how content gets made is a feature, not a confession.
How this site makes money (full disclosure)
Three ways, all of them visible on the page:
- Advertising. Clearly labeled ad units. Advertisers do not see drafts, do not get editorial input, and cannot buy a recommendation.
- Our own tools for homeowners. Some pages link to getmyroofestimatenow.com, a free satellite roof-estimate site James also owns. Those links are labeled and use sponsored link attributes.
- Software for roofing contractors. James builds products for the trade (Archie, an AI inspection app; KontentFire; The Roofer's Edge community). Promos for them appear only on contractor-facing pages, in cards labeled "Built by the team behind this site."
And the whole family in one sentence: The Roofing Manual is one of seven roofing properties James owns and operates, together with Charlotte Roofing Hub, Get My Roof Estimate Now, Best Roofing Now, The Roofer's Edge, Local Certified Roofers, and Local Commercial Roofing.
What we do not do: sell your information, run undisclosed affiliate schemes, or accept payment from roofing companies for placement or endorsement.
What this site is not
It is not a contractor directory, not a lead broker, and not a substitute for a licensed professional standing on your actual roof. Calculators here are informational estimates with their assumptions shown (see the disclaimer). When it is time for real work, hire a licensed, insured local roofer, and use what you learned here to hire them well.
